Once were loved

I’ve always been fascinated with graveyards. I not only find them peaceful places with a strong aesthetic appeal, but I like the snapshot into the history of an area, and the people who inhabited it that they reveal. After a cancer diagnosis in 2020, I found myself spending a lot of time contemplating my mortality, and as macabre as it sounds, I found graveyards to be the perfect place to do this. We are only on this earth for a short time before we return to the ethereal wilderness, and after that, what do we leave behind other than memories and decaying memorials to show that we once were loved, significant to a few people, for a handful of years, and then gone. Graveyards help me understand my place in the grand scheme of the universe.
