A House is not a Home

Farming is a hard way of life, and Wales is littered with the remnants of farmhouses now in states of dereliction where the lifestyle has proved unviable, or unappealing to successive generations. This is a photo essay about one such house, on the ever shifting banks of the River Usk, photographed over the course of four seasons. I have now finished shooting this project and I’m presently in the process of editing for publication as a book, with poems by a Welsh hill farmer. Watch this space!

  • This was not a farmhouse but a Malthouse belonging to a Malster named Thomas Brown , listed on the 1844 LLanwenarth survey .As my comments on Abergavenny voice giving you a bit of background to later history of occupation , there are few more anecdotes i could furnish you with .

    • Thank you. That’s really useful. The building in my eyes is in some ways a metaphor for the decline of traditional farming and rural life associated with it, but it’s great to have that input. I’d love to have a chat
